Missed Class: Security and Copyright

As I was reading through the articles on Digital Citizenship a recurring thought entered my head, "It must be difficult for parents and teachers who are digital immigrants to understand and properly monitor children's internet use." Although not completely surprised by some of the stories of how creatively children have maliciously used the internet to hurt others still amazes me. There are also a lot of scary unintentional things like "porn traps" that anyone can easily fall into. I enjoyed the "Real Life Stories" of cyber bullying. My school has spent all year working through bullying curriculum in their Home Room class and I thought of my school as I watched these videos. I'm sad that the youtube video was no longer working. It sounded interesting.

The copyright and fair use thing stil baffles me. After reading through everything I'm almost more scared to do anything because I might unintentionally use something inappropriately. The guidelines do help and are probably something I will keep close! I know with teaching theatre, royalties and copyright is always an issue! I am very thankful, though, that I understand the use of turn it in. I've heard some complaints from other students that have been afraid of it picking up usage that just happens to sound like some other authors words. I think the perameters of the program have been made carefully to avoid this problem. I don't know if I'll ever use this program in the future, but I see how it can be a tool to help students learn good writing and citation skills.
